Historic wedding venues in Puglia with olive groves: a masseria among the trees

In short

Yes: many of Puglia's masserie, the historic farm estates of the region, stand among olive groves. Tenuta Montevitolo is a 19th-century masseria in the countryside of Andria, in northern Puglia, restored by the Alicino family, where the ceremony usually takes place outdoors in the olive grove, among Coratina olive trees, with Castel del Monte on the horizon. It hosts one wedding a day and is 50 minutes from Bari airport.

A masseria, and the olive trees around it

A masseria is a historic farm estate of Puglia: the house, the courtyards, the stores and the land around them, built to work the countryside. Many of them stand among olive groves, because olive oil has been the work of this region for centuries. If you are new to the word, Saverio explains it in what is a masseria.

Ours is a 19th-century masseria in the countryside of Andria, in northern Puglia, inland on the Murgia plateau at about 340 metres. My family acquired it and restored it; we have been making oil and wine since 1859, and the estate is still a working farm. We prune the olive trees by hand in January, and in late autumn the olives go to the family's new mill, built in 2024. The variety here is Coratina, the olive of this area. Our land borders the Alta Murgia National Park, and from the masseria you can see Castel del Monte on the horizon.

What an olive grove gives a ceremony

I walk through the grove most days, at every hour, so let me be concrete. An olive tree does not give the dense shade of an oak. It gives a broken, moving shade: the leaves are green on top and silver underneath, and when the air moves the light flickers through them. In the late afternoon that light falls sideways between the trunks, and the faces of the couple stay soft, without hard shadows. An olive grove gives far more shade than an open lawn, which matters in a Puglia summer.

Then there is the air. We are on a plateau, away from the coast, and in the evening the breeze usually picks up. After a hot day guests notice it straight away. And there is the quiet: no road noise, no neighbours, because we host one event a day and the whole masseria is yours.

Timing the ceremony with the sun

Everything starts from the sunset time of your day. Usually the ceremony is in the olive grove in the late afternoon, then the aperitivo, the Italian pre-dinner drinks, moves to the vineyard at sunset, and dinner follows in the Corte Grande, the large courtyard, under the luminarie, the traditional Apulian festival lights. In mid-June the sun sets at 20:29 in Andria; in mid-September at 19:06. Finish the ceremony before the last hour of light and you get the best of it for your photos. The full table for every month is in sunset times for wedding photos.

Practical tips for an olive grove ceremony

  • Heat: in June, July and August avoid the middle of the day. Move the ceremony as late as you can, have water ready when guests arrive and fans on the chairs in high summer.
  • The ground: an olive grove is earth and grass, not a floor. Thin heels sink. Tell your guests in the invitation; block heels or flat shoes will thank you.
  • Elderly guests: seat them last, just before the ceremony begins, close to the aisle and on the shortest path. They are the first to feel the sun and the last to complain.
  • Children: give them a corner in the shade and someone to keep an eye on them. Among the trunks they will find games on their own.
  • The breeze: candles inside glass, light decorations tied down, and a thought for long veils.
  • After sunset: on the plateau the evening can turn fresher. A shawl or a light jacket is never too much, even in summer.

If the weather turns, and coming to see it

Summers on the Murgia are usually hot and dry, but a summer storm can always arrive. That is why every moment of the day has a plan B here at the masseria: if the weather changes, the party moves, it does not stop. Ask to see each alternative when you visit, moment by moment.

And do visit. An olive grove at eleven in the morning and the same grove at six in the evening are two different places. Come by appointment, if you can at the hour of your ceremony: we are 15 minutes from the centre of Andria and 50 minutes from Bari airport. Write to us with your date or the month you have in mind, and Vito explains how the rest of the day works in our masseria wedding venue near Bari.
