Wedding dress code in the Italian countryside: what to write on the invitation and wear
One clear line on the invitation is enough: the tone of the party plus one practical note, for example «Smart summer attire; block heels for the lawn», with the details explained on your wedding website or in the guests' app. In the Italian countryside what matters is the season, the hour and the ground: light fabrics in summer, block or low heels on grass and stone, a jacket or shawl for the evening in the hills. By tradition, white is left to the bride.

Two numbers before choosing what to wear
Three hundred and forty metres of average altitude, and a sunset that in mid-September comes at 19:06. Those are the two numbers I would put next to the dress code of a masseria wedding. The first says we are in the hills, on the Murgia plateau of northern Puglia, inland and not by the sea: in the evening the air changes. The second says that a good part of the party happens after dark. An outfit chosen for five in the afternoon has to work at midnight too.
What a dress code means at an Italian wedding
If your guests have never been to a wedding in Italy, tell them that Italians tend to dress up for a wedding rather than down: smart is the starting point, in the countryside too. On an Italian invitation «abito elegante» simply means smart, and «abito scuro», a dark suit, is the most formal formula. Full black tie is unusual at Italian weddings: if you want it, write it plainly.
One line on the invitation, the rest in the app
One clear sentence on the invitation is enough: the tone of the party and, if needed, one practical note. Long explanations go elsewhere. Some lines that work:
- «Smart attire, light fabrics: outdoor ceremony»
- «Smart summer attire; block heels for the lawn»
- «Smart, with a shawl or jacket for the evening»
- «Dark suit and tie for men, long dresses for women»: the most formal formula, to use only if you really want it.
The details belong on your wedding website or in the guests' app. In our couples' private area guests ask their questions and the answers are visible to everyone: «Can I wear sandals?» is answered once, not for every cousin. If your guests speak different languages, write the line in each of them.
Season, hour, and the ground underfoot
- May and October: mild days, evenings that cool quickly. Light sleeves, but one more layer for after sunset.
- June, July and August, in the evening: light natural fabrics such as linen, cotton and silk; pale colours help under the sun of the ceremony.
- September: summer until sunset, then a wrap.
- November to March, by day: heavier fabrics, and a coat for the walks outdoors from one space to another.
- Lunch or dinner: by day, light colours and matt fabrics; in the evening you can be bolder.
In the countryside you walk on grass, packed earth and stone. A thin heel sinks into the lawn and catches between the stones; a block heel, a wedge or a flat sandal does not. Put it on the invitation without worrying about seeming inelegant: it is a courtesy. Whoever wants high heels wears them at dinner and keeps a flat pair in a bag for walking and dancing. The same goes for men: smooth leather soles slip on stone more than you would expect. For the sun side of an outdoor ceremony, read a summer daytime wedding in Puglia.

White, and men in summer
By tradition white and ivory are left to the bride. Most guests know the rule; mention it gently on the invitation or in the app only if you fear surprises. For a civil union use a neutral line, such as «please leave white to the couple», or whatever wording the two of you prefer.
For men in summer a light jacket in linen or cotton is enough and much appreciated; the tie can be optional. Jackets usually come off after dinner, when the groom takes his off: guests read the signal on their own. If you have chosen a colour palette, do not impose it on your guests; suggest it at most.
Guests from far away, elderly guests and children
- In the suitcase: an outfit that does not crease, or one that can be hung up on arrival; spare shoes; a shawl or jacket, even in August.
- Flying in: Bari airport is 50 minutes from the masseria. The outfit goes in hand luggage if possible, so that a lost suitcase does not mean a lost dress.
- Elderly guests: comfortable closed shoes and a warm layer for the evening. They are the first to feel the cool of the hills.
- Children: clothes they can run in, and a change in the car. A child in the countryside always finds the earth.
My last piece of advice is logistical: send the dress code with the invitation, together with the address and the travel times; there is more on getting here on our contact page. Whoever needs to buy an outfit needs time. And if you are still choosing the season, tell us the month you have in mind: we will tell you how the light and the air change at the hour of your party.
